An orthodontic support program for general dentists practicing orthodontics. This ongoing program will assist dentists in incorporating orthodontics into their general practices.
Dr. Mike Lowry graduated from the University of Alberta in 1983 with a DDS degree. He practices in Lacombe, Alberta in a
group practice offering full-service family dentistry. Mike completed a five-year orthodontic program from the United States Dental Institute in 1994, focusing on fixed straight wire orthodontics, functional appliances, cephalometric analysis, diagnosis, TMD therapy, and related topics.
Dr. Lowry has continued his orthodontic training by attending seminars with Dr. Rondeau (Level 1 & 2 Training), Dr. Garcia (TMD Seminars), and Dr. Olmos (TMD/Sleep Seminar). Additionally, he has been an instructor with Rondeau Seminars for over ten years, a mentor for 4 Advanced Study Clubs, an examiner with the International Board of Orthodontics (IBO), a Master Senior Instructor with the International Association for Orthodontics, and a graduate of the Facial Beauty Institute.
His memberships include the Canadian Dental Association, Alberta Dental Association, International Association for Orthodontics (Past President, Fellow and Senior Instructor), American Association of Functional Orthodontics, United States Dental Institute, and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. Dr. Lowry is a diplomat with the IBO and the IAO. In addition, he is a graduate of the IAO Instructors Institute and served as President of the IAO from April 2012 to April 2013.
STUDY GROUP PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of the Faces N Braces Study Group is early interceptive treatment; jaw orthopedics (where necessary), and straight-wire orthodontics. The use of extractions and headgears will be minimized wherever possible but recommended where necessary. Clinical cases will be evaluated individually with an emphasis on orthopedic and related orthodontic problems.
PROGRAM
The aim of the study club is to assist general dentists in incorporating orthodontics into their everyday practice schedules. Orthodontics adds a stimulating and rewarding dimension to the practice of dentistry. Participation in this study club assumes an introductory level of orthodontic knowledge including: record taking, cephalometrics, and dental arch analysis. An emphasis will be placed on appliance therapy to resolve the skeletal discrepancies and straight wire treatment to align the teeth.
CLINICAL UPDATE
The clinical update will happen the first hour of all study group dates. The Mentor will introduce and teach new techniques in orthodontics.
CASE REVIEW
Consultation on cases will be done in a group concept where each participant brings their cases to be reviewed by the mentor and other members. Cases will be reviewed one per participant in order of daily registration following the clinical update.
PREREQUISITES
For dentists that have attended continuing education courses in orthodontics, are actively treating cases, and have complete records for all cases to be presented at the study group.
