SUMMARY:Faces & Braces – Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:An orthodontic support program for general dentists practicing orthodontics. This ongoing program will assist dentists in incorporating orthodontics into their general practices. \nDr. Mike Lowry graduated from the University of Alberta in 1983 with a DDS degree. He practices in Lacombe\, Alberta in a \ngroup practice offering full-service family dentistry. Mike completed a five-year orthodontic program from the United States Dental Institute in 1994\, focusing on fixed straight wire orthodontics\, functional appliances\, cephalometric analysis\, diagnosis\, TMD therapy\, and related topics. \nDr. Lowry has continued his orthodontic training by attending seminars with Dr. Rondeau (Level 1 & 2 Training)\, Dr. Garcia (TMD Seminars)\, and Dr. Olmos (TMD/Sleep Seminar). Additionally\, he has been an instructor with Rondeau Seminars for over ten years\, a mentor for 4 Advanced Study Clubs\, an examiner with the International Board of Orthodontics (IBO)\, a Master Senior Instructor with the International Association for Orthodontics\, and a graduate of the Facial Beauty Institute. \nHis memberships include the Canadian Dental Association\, Alberta Dental Association\, International Association for Orthodontics (Past President\, Fellow and Senior Instructor)\, American Association of Functional Orthodontics\, United States Dental Institute\, and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. Dr. Lowry is a diplomat with the IBO and the IAO. In addition\, he is a graduate of the IAO Instructors Institute and served as President of the IAO from April 2012 to April 2013. \n\nSTUDY GROUP PHILOSOPHY\nThe philosophy of the Faces N Braces Study Group is early interceptive treatment; jaw orthopedics (where necessary)\, and straight-wire orthodontics. The use of extractions and headgear will be minimized wherever possible but recommended where necessary. Clinical cases will be evaluated individually with an emphasis on orthopedic and related orthodontic problems. \n\nPROGRAM\nThe aim of the study club is to assist general dentists in incorporating orthodontics into their everyday practice schedules. Orthodontics adds a stimulating and rewarding dimension to the practice of dentistry. Participation in this study club assumes an introductory level of orthodontic knowledge including: record taking\, cephalometrics\, and dental arch analysis. An emphasis will be placed on appliance therapy to resolve the skeletal discrepancies and straight wire treatment to align the teeth. \n\nCLINICAL UPDATE\nThe clinical update will happen the first hour of all study group dates. The Mentor will introduce and teach new techniques in orthodontics. \n\nCASE REVIEW\nConsultation on cases will be done in a group concept where each participant brings their cases to be reviewed by the mentor and other members. Cases will be reviewed one per participant in order of daily registration following the clinical update. \n\nPREREQUISITES\nFor dentists that have attended continuing education courses in orthodontics\, are actively treating cases\, and have complete records for all cases to be presented at the study group. \n\nFACES N BRACES\n2024/2025 ORTHODONTIC STUDY GROUP \n\nDATE\nSeptember 14\, 2024 / February 01\, 2025 / April 26\, 2025

SUMMARY:Vancouver Island Dental Specialists - Minimally Invasive Soft Tissue Grafting Course
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS\nRecession defects are common among patients that are cared for by dentists and periodontists. There are several indications for treatment\, and there are numerous methods used to address tissue quality and stability issues. This one-day course is designed for the clinician who wants to learn more about connective tissue\, free gingival\, and dermal graft procedures for root coverage. Course participants will develop basic skills to treat simple to moderately complex cases. This course will include a lecture review and live demonstration of the procedures/techniques\, indications\, limitations\, side-effects or potential complications and use of appropriate surgical instruments. The unique benefits of using Straumann’s acellular dermal matrix graft will be discussed and illustrated VS where and why autogenous tissue should be considered. The use of 4 tunneling instruments developed by Dr. Leziy and marketed by ProNorth Medical will be illustrated. These instruments are available for purchase at the course. \n\nCOURSE OBJECTIVES\nPART 1  \nLECTURE WITH DR. LEZIY/DR. NAULT/DR. HART \n1 Hour didactic/lecture on current grafting concepts. Understand the gold standard autogenous graft indications and where allografts can be used. This lecture will cover terminology\, the varying contemporary surgical protocols that are used for tissue augmentation\, indications\, and treatment outcomes/expectations.  \nPART 2  \nObservation of several live surgeries demonstrating the Dermal ARC grafting protocol and current connective tissue and free gingival graft procedures for root coverage. Dr. Leziy\, Dr. Nault and Dr. Hart will each treat a patient. Participants will have the opportunity to move between each of the surgeries to see varying approaches unique to the clinical situation of the patient.  \nPART 3  \nAll participants will have the opportunity to perform surgery on one of their own patients under the supervision of Dr. Leziy\, Dr. Nault and Dr. Hart. \n • Clinicians who are not licensed in BC may observe other participants. Cases should be preselected by the participant.  \n•• We strongly encourage you to forward in electronic format\, photographs of the cases that you intend to treat\, to make this the best learning experience possible.  \nIdeally\, large regions requiring treatment should be considered [4+ teeth) for dermal graft cases\, while 1-3 teeth for connective tissue or free gingival graft cases\, in otherwise periodontally healthy patients.  \nIt is ideal to select patients who are not extremely anxious and that do not require sedation for treatment. \n\nEXPECTATIONS\nDERMAL GRAFT\, CT GRAFT & FGG TECHNIQUES – IN-DEPTH PROCEDURE REVIEW \n• Review of surgical instrumentation\, flap designs\, suturing techniques.  \n• Recipient site preparation options.  \n• Donor site harvesting methods and post-surgical management will be discussed and illustrated.  \n• The rationale for using acellular dermal grafts will be discussed.  \n• Understand the healing phase and treatment outcomes.  \n• Post-surgical management of your patient.  \n• Identifying treatment risks and managing surgical and post-surgical complications. \n\nWHAT IS INCLUDED\n• 1-day education program\, coffee/lunch.  \n• Dermal matrix graft material – provided by Straumann.  \n• Sutures – provided by ProNorth Medical (Rob Horne)  \n• Use of our tunneling instruments.  \n• Surgical tunneling kits will be available for purchase – Please request in advance. \n\nWHAT IS NOT INCLUDED\n• A patient for the hands-on supervised treatment.  \n• You are responsible for bringing/arranging for a CDA.  \n• Your own protective eyewear/magnification\, uniform/gowns/patient drapes.  \n• Your favourite gloves\, masks\, protective eyewear for your CDA and patient\, your preferred local anaesthetic\, post-surgical medications/rinses.  \n• 15C scalpel blades\, analgesics to be administered prior to surgery\, preop oral rinse.  \n• Surgical setup\, your favourite surgical instruments (basic recommendations will be provided on registration).  \n• Prescription pad or prepared scripts \n\nDATE\nSATURDAY\, OCTOBER 26TH \n8 CE CREDIT HOURS \n$1250 +GST \nLimited to 12 participants \nContact Stacey to reserve your space for this advanced clinical course. \nEmail: stacey@videntalspecialists.com
